The Hollywood Brown Derby is part of
America's culture.  It was the food that brought
the movie industry to The Brown Derby in
1926 but when people talk about The Brown
Derby, they mean the one at Hollywood and
Vine.
Eat in the Hat - The Brown Derby Hat
The first 'hat-shaped' Brown Derby Restaurant
opened at Wilshire Blvd. & Alexandria in Los
Angeles across from the Ambassador Hotel.
The Beginning...
A Hollywood movie entrepreneur decides to open a
coffee shop on Wilshire Boulevard inspired by the
whimsical architecture then popular in Los Angeles
and by the shape of the hat worn by visiting New York
governor and presidential candidate, Al Smith.
Encouraged by the restaurant's success with L.A.'s
movie colony, another Brown Derby is planned.
A Legend is Born...
It soon attracted a sizeable following from the city's burgeoning movie industry.  Stars received fan mail
addressed simply to:  The Brown Derby, Hollywood and Vine.  For many years, the formidable gossip
columnists, Louella Parsons and Hedda Hopper, both made The Brown Derby their "semi-official"
headquarters... Clark Gable proposed to Carole Lombard and she accepted... Famous dishes such as
the world famous Cobb Salad and the Grapefruit Cake were created here.  New concepts such as
telephone at table side were pioneered here.
